"Interred here ARCHIBALD BEATTIE, Town Drummer, who for more than half a century kept up the ancient and annual custom of proclaiming the Langholm Fair at the Cross when riding the common granted to the town and pointing out to the inhabitants thereof the various boundaries of those rights which descended from their ancestors to posterity. He died in 1823 aged 90 years. The Managers of the Common Riding for the year 1829 have caused his name to be here inscribed as a tribute of respect justly due to his memory."

Likewise Janet MURRAY daughter to John MURRAY shepherd in Lanshaburn who died 30th April 1812 aged 4 years.
Also George MURRAY his son who died 30th June 1823 aged 10 months.
Also Esther MURRAY his daughter born at Lanshaburn 12th August 1826 died 30th August 1836.
Also the said John MURRAY died at Lanshaburn 1st April 1849 aged 70 years.
Also Esther COWAN his relict, Lanshaburn who died 4th August 1856 aged 75 years.
On the reverse of this stone is an acrostic on the name John MURRAY - he resided with his parents at Langshawburn and perished in the snow on Fingland Hill November 1825
aged 18 years."
