"DEATH OF AN OLD INHABITANT.— The death occurred on Friday, at his residence, Gowanbank, of Mr Simon Dalgliesh, one of the oldest inhabitants of Selkirk, in his 93rd year. He was a native of Eskdalemuir. At the age of 14 he accompanied his father to the farm of Midgehope, Ettrick, and afterwards became joint-tenant with him of the farms of Potburn and Upper Phawhope, the most outlying farms in Ettrick water. Twenty years ago he took a lease of Altrieve in Yarrow, which his youngest son now farms. Eight years ago he retired from active work and came to reside in Selkirk. An excellent type of the old Border farmer, he was full of the traditions of Border agriculture, and as a man of honest character won the respect of all. His wife died eight years ago after a wedded life of 63 years. There was a family of twelve, ten of whom survive—seven daughters and three sons. The funeral took place on Tuesday in Ettrick Churchyard."

2Newspaper Obituary, Oamaru Mail Sat 27 Jun 1896.
"The death of Mrs James Dalgleish, of Papakaio, recorded in our columns yesterday, removes from our midst one of the earliest settlers in the district. Mrs Dalgleish was a contemporary of the late Mrs Fricker and arrived in New Zealand as far back as 1858. Mr and Mrs Dalgleish were accompanied to the colony by their children John, Archie, and Ann (now Mrs Hawthorne Stewart). After filling several station appointments — at Ben Lomond among others — Mr and Mrs Dalgleish settled in the Papakaio district, where they continued to permanently reside, pioneer settlers, bearing their fair share of the burthen and heat of the day. Since then Mrs Dalgleish has, with the true settler spirit, identified herself with the district in which she had founded her home. She has survived her partner in life for many years, and though latterly an almost chronic invalid, she has borne her failing health with unfailing cheerfulness and resignation — with the true old-fashioned optimism which characterised the forced inaction of many of our pioneer settlers, to whom hard work had become almost a necessity of existence. She was a woman whose kindliness of disposition endeared her to all with whom she came in contact, and her decease in a ripe and honorable old age, is a matter of sincere regret to her relatives and friends, In addition to the children above referred to, Mrs Dalgleish leaves two brothers in the colony — Mr Thos. Pagan, of Oamaru, and Mr Archibald Pagan, of Palmerston. The funeral took place this afternoon and, despite the inclemency of the weather, was largely attended."

182. William DALGLIESH

1Newspaper, Clutha Leader 24 Jan 1902.
"It is with sincere regret we have to record the death of Mr William Dalgliesh, which took place at his residence, Puerua, yesterday afternoon. He was lying on a sofa in a room by himself, when he called out to his son-in-law, Mr D. J. McEwan, and when the latter went in to him, he found Mr Dalgliesh was dead. Mr Dalgliesh was a very old and respected resident of the Clutha, and was present at the Old Settlers' picnic on Wednesday, apparently in good health, his usual health, however, had never recovered from an attack of influenza last winter. We heard Mr Dalgliesh say on Wednesday evening that he crossed the Clutha bridge on New Year's morning 1857. Heart disease was, we believe, the cause of death. He was about 68 years of age."

2Newspaper Obituary, Clutha Leader 28 Jan 1902.
"THE LATE WILLIAM DALGLIESH.
Mr William Dalgliesh, whose sudden death we announced on Friday, was born at Langbottom, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, on November 9th, 1833. He was the son of a tenant farmer in a fairly large way, and came to the colony with his newly-married wife in the ship Bosworth in 1857. Upon his arrival in the colony he almost immediately found employment as a shepherd, in which he had had considerable experience at home, with Messrs Smith and Allan, who at that time had almost the entire Tokomairiro district as a sheep run. Mr Smith afterwards became the well-known proprietor of Greenfield, and Mr Allan the well-known owner of the Hopehill estate on the Taieri. Mr Dalgliesh was with this firm for six weeks, when he left to become head shepherd for Mr Gordon Rich of the Wairuna estate. Together with his wife, who had remained in Dunedin, the late Mr Dalgliesh walked to Wairuna, crossing the Clutha river on New Years Day 1858. From the Clutha to Wairuna Mrs Dalgliesh got a ride on a mule from Mr John Graham, who was then carrying mails, Mr Dalgliesh was with Mr Rich for a period of five years, when he removed to the Bracken Hill properly, which he had acquired in the meantime, and where he resided till the time of his death. The eldest son and daughter (Mrs McEwan) were born at Kohi Bush, Wairuna. Subsequently Mr Dalgliesh entered into partnership with the late Mr Chas. Stuart, afterwards partner in the auctioneering firm of Driver, Stuart and Co, in the Lochindorb station, which was afterwards sold to Messrs Cumine Bros, and, the partnership dissolving, Mr Dalgliesh settled down at Bracken Hill. The first residence was a sod whare, this being afterwards replaced hy a wattle and dab house, the latter giving place to the present house, which stands on the same site. The late Mr Dalgliesh was a pushing enterprising colonist, and took his full share in the trials and hardships incidental to a settler's life in those early days. Kindly and hospitable in his nature, he was honoured and respected by a very wide circle of friends and acquaintances. He was generous in all his dealings with all men, and he was ever ready with a helping hand to those in need. Indeed, in matters of generosity and kind heartedness, the public could form but a poor conception of the extent of Mr Dalgliesh's influence, for these matters he never paraded in public, and it might be truly said of him that he never let his left hand know what his right hand was doing. In public affairs and church matters he took more than a passing interest. He was one of the first members of the Clutha County Council, was for years chairman of the Warepa Road Board, and the Waitepeka School Committee. For the past three years he suffered from an affection of the heart, and during that time was more or less under the care of his medical adviser, Dr Smith. An attack of influenza last winter left him in worse health than before. He was present at the early settlers' picnic on Wednesday last and was apparently in good health and spirits. He died the following day about halfpast three o'clock while lying on the sofa reading the papers. He is survived by a family of seven sons and three daughters. Of the former, John, Simon, and James are in the North Island ; William is at home, Matthew is in business in Balclutha, Walter is in the Stock Department at Gore, Charles Stuart who went with the Fourth Contingent is with the Stock Department at Kurow ; of the three daughters Annie is at home, Eliza is Mrs P. Grant of Puerua, and the other is Mrs D. J. McEwan of Tapuka, Bay of Plenty. His wife also survives him, and with the family, has the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends. The funeral on Saturday was one of the largest ever seen in the district. The Rev A. M. Dalrymple was the officiating clergyman."

Elizabeth PAGAN

1Newspaper Obituary, Clutha Leader 18 May 1917 and Bruce Herald 21 May 1917.
"MRS ELIZABETH DALGLEISH.
Another link connecting the present with the early days of colonisation has been severed by the death of Mrs Elizabeth Dalgleish, which occurred at her late residence, "Bracken Hill," Puerua, shortly after 10 o'clock yesterday morning, at the advanced age of 85 years. The deceased lady had been in failing health for several years, and her demise was not unexpected. The late Mrs Dalgleish (nee Pagan) was a native of Dumfriesshire (Scotland), and was married to the late Mr Wm. Dalgleish, Dumfries, on April 7, 1857. Shortly afterwards, they emigrated to Otago, arriving in the same year by the ship Boswortb. They settled on the Wairuna Estate on January, 1858, where the late Mr Dalgleish was engaged as a shepherd by the late Mr Gordon Rich. As an instance of the difficulties that had to be faced and overcome by the early pioneers it might be stated that Mr and Mrs Dalgleish, in order to get to Wairuna, walked from Dunedin to the Clutha River, and after crossing the river they were joined by "Jock" Graham, well known in the fifties as a mail carrier in the backblocks. The latter removed his mailbags from the mule on which they had been placed, and Mrs Dalgleish was given the post of honour on the animal's back, Mr Dalgleish and the mail carrier completing the journey on foot. Later Mr and Mrs Dalgleish took up land at Puerua, where the former died in 1902, and where the latter resided until her death. The deceased lady was noted far and wide for her hospitality, and a "richt guid" kindly Scottish welcome always awaited travellers in that part of the country, the home of the Dalgleishs being looked on in the early days as a halfway house on the road to Purekireki, and right to the present day hospitality had always been dispensed with a lavish hand at "Bracken Hill." The late Mrs Dalgleish, who was a staunch Presbyterian, was a splendid type of the sturdy old pioneers who assisted in making New Zealand the prosperous country it is today. Altogether 10 children (seven sons and three daughters) were born to Mr and Mrs Dalgleish, all of whom are still living. They are as follows: Mrs McEwan (Tepuki), Mrs Grant (Puerua), Miss Annie (Puerua), John (Hamilton), James (Carterton), Simon (Carterton), Matthew (Christchurch), Walter (Wanganui), Stewart (Hokitika), and William (Puerua). Mrs Alex. Petrie (Waitapeka) was a sister of deceased. The funeral will leave "Bracken Hill" on Saturday at 1 o'clock for the Romahapa cemetery. Rev. A. N. Dalrymple will conduct tho burial service."

2Newspaper Obituary, Waikato Times 27 Apr 1932.
"MR WILLIAM DALGLIESH.
Another link with the pioneering days of New Zealand has been severed with the death of Mr William Dalgliesh, whose death has occurred after a short illness.
Deceased who was born at Puerua, Otago, in 1863, was a son of one of that province’s earliest settlers, Mr W Dalgliesh, who was in those days associated with the late Mr Charles Stewart in the ownership of a government station in the Clutha district. Spending the earlier years of his life assisting in the general work of the farm Mr Dalgliesh gained a thorough knowledge of practical farming and the breeding and handling of all classes of stock. In 1887 he came to the North Island, and entered the employment of the late Sir Walter Buchanan, for several years managing his property at Greytown. After leaving that, deceased spent some time with his brothers Simon and James contract droving between the Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay districts. At times Mr Dalgliesh assisted the late Mr L. F. Ayson, inspector of fisheries, and when the latter was sent by the New Zealand Government to England and America to collect information about fish and fisheries Mr Dalgliesh took charge of the Masterton fish ponds, and was later appointed by the Government to establsh the ponds at Hakatarama. A few years later he relinquished this work, and when the death of his father occurred he took over the home farm, and managed it until failing health and the effects of an accident caused his retirement, and he then came north. While in the Clutha district deceased was actively connected with most of the local bodies, and was for a term president of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association there, also acting as judge at many of the sheep dog trials. He was a member of the Greytown Masonic Lodge.
Since coming to Hamilton deceased kept a small fruit and confectionery business in Victoria Street North, which he had carried on for six or seven years. Mr Dalgliesh had many friends, and news of his death will be widely regretted."
