4008. Dr Gladys Alma MCKELVIE LL D., F R A M,

1Newspaper, Calgary Herald 7 Mar 1968.
"One of this continent's most highly regarded music teachers, Dr. Gladys McKelvie Egbert, died today in Holy Cross hospital.
Born in Winnipeg, Dr. Egbert came to Calgary as a child, and, although she left the city to further her own musical education, she returned in 1921 to teach and make Calgary known as the home of Canada's top pianists.
Although Dr. Egbert began her music studies in Calgary when the city was still a "cow-town" and had to ride to her music lessons on a pony, her talent soon became known.
At 12 years of age she became the first Canadian and the youngest person to win a scholarship to England's Royal Academy of the Royal College of Music.
In 1938 she was made a fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, one of the world's most coveted musical honors.
She was honored again in Calgary in 1965 when she was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree by the University of Calgary.
Dr. Egbert was predeceased in 1960 by her husband, Gordon Egbert, a former justice of the Supreme Court of Alberta and the son of former Lt.-Governor Dr. William Egbert."

2Newspaper Announcement, Calgary Herald Sat 9 Mar 1968.

Mr Justice William Gordon EGBERT

1Newspaper Obituary, Calgary Herald Tue 9 Feb 1960.
"Funeral services for Mr. Justice William Gordon Egbert, for 10 years a member of the trail division of the Supreme Court of Alberta, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Christ Church, Elbow Park, with Canon W.H. H. Crump officiating.

Mr. Justice Egbert came to Calgary with his parents and a sister in 1904. He was born at Milverton, Ont., on Feb. 11, 1892, the son of Hon. William and Eva C. Egbert, and received his early education in Eastern Canada before moving here.

STUDIED LAW
Attending Central High School in Calgary, he gave up plans to become a doctor (his father's profession) and elected to study law. At Central High School he took part in field sports and excelled particularly in 100 and 200-yard events. He was named president of the school's athletic association.

Because there was no law course at the University of Alberta at the time, he enrolled at the University of Toronto. After winning the P.W. Ellis medal, highest honor in the graduation year in political science, at Toronto in 1913, he went to Osgoode Hall for one year.

Returning to Calgary, he took lectures from prominent Calgary barristers and in 1916 won the Law Society Gold Medal.

ADMITTED TO BAR
Introduced to Leo Miller, he was admitted to the Alberta bar in 1916 after articling with the firm of Griffith, Ford and Miller.

In 1924 he married Gladys McKelvie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Neil McKelvie.

Specializing in corporation law, Mr. Justice Egbert was with the firm of Clarke, Carson and McLeod until he went into partnership with the late A.L. Smith in 1925.

He became the first president of the young men's section of the Calgary Board of Trade, the first organization of its kind in the province.

A highly respected member of the Alberta bench after his appointment in 1950, Mr. Justice Egbert was noted for his humane decisions and for written judgments that were considered among the best in Western Canada.

He was a member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club and the Ranchmen's Club. He lived at 3616 Elbow Drive.

In 1953 Mr. Justice Egbert admitted his son, William, to the Alberta bar.

Mr. Justice Egbert is survived by his wife, the former Gladys McKelvie, a son William, of Calgary, and a daughter, Mrs. Peter Swann, of Calgary."

Joyce Marie THORDARSON

1Newspaper Obituary, Winnipeg Free Press 12 Nov 2009.
"JOYCE MARIE GLENDINNING (THORDARSON) March 29, 1932 - November 8, 2009 On Sunday, November 8, 2009, our beautiful and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and mother-in-law, Joyce Marie (Jo), left us. Jo was born in Hartney, Manitoba, and grew up in Brandon. She attended Brandon College and received her BA in 1953. She excelled in sports, especially track and field, which earned her the Athlete of the Year award in her graduating year. In 1955, she earned a Master's Degree in Social Work at the University of Manitoba. In 1957, while working as a social worker, she met and married Bob, who would be her love and soul-mate for 52 years. Together they raised five children: Lisa (Randy), Sigrid (Raymond), Lesley (Will), Signy (Mike) and Chris. Jo adored her 14 beautiful grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. When their children were grown, Jo's passion for literature, the arts and ideas led her naturally to a second career at McNally Robinson Booksellers, where she met many people and formed lasting friendships. Jo contributed to her community in many ways, as a member of the Aboriginal Friendship Committee at Fort Garry United Church, PEO, Grands and More (AIDS, Africa), Habitat for Humanity, as a school reading tutor, and a member of other social and political action groups. She was an avid reader, a lifelong learner and was always ready to try something new. She was an inveterate member of a French Conversation class, where, as in all her activities, she formed wonderful friendships. She loved music of all genres, but most of all loved playing the piano to Bob's clarinet. Her latest musical adventure was playing the African djembe drum. A celebration of Jo's life will be held at Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Road, Winnipeg, on Friday, November 13, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. Our family thanks the caring and compassionate staff at 3E, Palliative Care Unit, Riverview Health Centre and Manitoba Home Care."
