"Birth At Dumfedling, Eskdalemuir, on the 22nd inst., the wife of Thomas Beattie, Esq of Davington, of a son
ESKDALEMUIR-Rejoicings have taken place on the birth of an heir to the Davington estate."

3Newspaper, Eskdale & Liddesdale Advertiser 31 Jan 1883.
"ESKDALEMUIR REJOICING During the forenoon of Monday, the 22nd inst., the news spread rapidly from house to house in Eskdalemuir, that the lady of Thomas Beattie, Esq. of Davington, had that morning presented her husband with a son and heir. In course of the day some of the neighbours and those resident on the grounds resolved that some demonstration should be made in honour of the auspicious event, and in the afternoon several loaded carts were observed making their way towards the summit of Davington Hill. This led the public to surmise that a bonfire was contemplated. Accordingly, towards, 8 o'clock p.m., a surprisingly large number of persons, old and young, male and female, had assembled on the hill top. Fire was immediately applied to the hastily collected combustibles, and while the blaze went upwards a gentleman in a few words proposed that the company should drink to the "Health and long life of the young heir of Davington." The toast was drunk with the highest enthusiasm and responded to by the firing of guns and deafening cheers, prolonged to three times three. The health of Mr and Mrs Beattie respectively, followed in succession, and were received with manifestations of hearty good will, and it was remarked in course of the demonstration that there were some present who could now say they had lived as contemporaries with five generations of the Lairds of Davington, in regular lineal succession. With a liberal supply of "talisker" to all who chose to partake, the fun and merriment increased, and the welkin rung with loud huzzahs. till
Distrub'd in their slumbers, the wild-fowl and hare
Fled panting in terror they didn't know where,
Pursued by the echoes they spent thier last breath
In efforsts to 'scape from the terrors of death"
About ten o'clock the bonfire had attained its cullminating point, and soon began to fall away, when the bulk of the company left the exposed summit, each highly pleased with himself and with "all about him," and resolved to mark with red ink in his almanac the 22nd of January, to be remembered as a red letter day in the annals of 'B3."
