686. John Aitken BEATTIE

1Newspaper Obituary, Pastoral Review and Graziers' Record, 16 September 1955.
"Beattie, John Aitken (1871–1955)

Mr. John Aitken Beattie, of Billenbah, Narrandera, N.S.W., one of the best known stud Hereford breeders in Australia, died suddenly at Leeton (N.S.W.) on 25th August at the age of 84.

Mr. Beattie was a son of the late Mr. Henry Beattie, who arrived in Australia from Scotland in the early '50's and subsequently settled on the land at Sunbury, Victoria. Mr. J. A. Beattie was born at Buttle Jock, Vic., and lived in that State for 53 years before going to Billenbah. He was educated privately and at an early age took over the management of his father's Hereford stud at Mount Aitken (Vic.). The stud was moved to Gisborne Park, Vic., in 1893, and afterwards to Billenbah in 1924. The Gisborne Hereford stud was established in 1868 and is recognised as one of the oldest registered Hereford studs in Australia. In 1950 it was divided between Mr. W. R. Beattie, of Glen Innes, N.S.W., who retained the Gisborne prefix, and Messrs. Beattie Bros., of Billenbah.

While he lived at Gisborne Park Mr. Beattie also formed Corriedale and English Leicester sheep studs by direct importations from New Zealand, and when he purchased Billenbah, a property of 7200 acres about 20 miles from Narrandera, with a frontage of nine miles to the Murrumbidgee River, the three studs were transferred there.

Mr. Beattie was a noted judge of Hereford cattle and British breeds of sheep and had officiated at many provincial and Royal Shows in the eastern States of Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. He was proud of the fact that he had attended 64 successive Royal Melbourne Shows. He was also an active member of the Australian Corriedale Association, being inspector for Riverina for many years, and was a keen member of the Riverina branch of the Graziers' Association of New South Wales. In his younger days he was a noted gun and rifle shot and, besides winning against some of the best shots of his day, also took part in many shoots for the King's Prize.

The late Mr. Beattie was a member of the first council of the Australian Hereford Society. He was vice-president from 1917 to 1923, president from March 1923 to April 1938, and was a trustee of the society at the time of his death. He was also a councillor of the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria for more than 40 years.

Mr. Beattie was a close personal friend of the late Captain Albert Pearse, founder of the Pastoral Review, and under the nom-de-plume of "Admirer" made many useful and interesting contributions to this paper.

He married Miss Elizabeth Macintyre, of Coralynn, Yering, Vic., who predeceased him in 1927, but he is survived by four sons—Oswald H., Valentine, and John Steven, all of Billenbah, and Water Russell, of Glen Innes."

705. John DALGLIESH

1Newspaper Announcement, Oamaru Mail 15 Apr 1919.
"DALGLEISH - On 14th April, at his residence, North Road (suddenly), John, the dearly beloved husband of Lavinia Dalgleish; aged 66 years.
Deeply regretted.
Friends are invited to kindly attend the Funeral which will leave his late residence, North Road, on Wednesday, 16th inst., at 1.45 p.m., for Oamaru Cemetery."

2Newspaper Obituary, Oamaru Mail 15 Apr 1919.
"A settler from the very earliest days of North Otago, when his father had a farm at Peebles, was lost by the sudden death of Mr John Dalgleish, of North road, last night. The late Mr Dalgleish, with his brother Archie, who died some time ago, were widely known as athletes, and were interested in all forms of sport, being prominent supporters and athletes at the meetings of the old Caledonian Society. They were also famed as winners at ploughing matches far and near. After leaving the farm at Peebles, the brothers took up a farm at Kakanui, where they were largely interested in draught sires. After leaving Kakanui the partnership was dissolved, the late Mr John Dalgleish coming to live at the North Road. Of a generous disposition he had many friends, who will regret the passing of the older, and, many maintain, the cleaner school of sport of which he was a worthy representative. Honest and industrious, he was highly esteemed throughout the district. He leaves two sons, one, Mr Stewart Dalgleish, just returned from the war, who had been a prisoner in Germany, and Mr William Dalgleish who resides at Papakaio and a daughter, Mrs McLean, of Kauroo Hill, to mourn their loss."

Lavinia SMITH

"McLEAN - On April 22, 1939, at Oamaru, John Ryley, beloved husband of Elizabeth Mary McLean, Kauru Hill; in his fifty-eighth year."

2Newspaper Obituary, Otago Daily Times 2 May 1939.
"Mr John Ryley McLean, whose death occurred at Oamaru on April 22, was the fourth son of the late Mr James McLean, of All Day Bay. He was born at All Day Bay in 1882, and attended the Kakanui School, and afterwards engaged in farming on his father's farm. He married Miss Dalgleish (Oamaru), and eventually took up his farm at Kauroo Hill, where he resided until his death. Mr McLean was of a quiet and unassuming nature, and took an active part in church and educational matters. He was highly respected by all who knew him. He is survived by his widow and a son and a daughter. He also leaves brothers and sisters, his death being the first break in a family of 10 for over 60 years."

Bridget Monica O'DONOGHUE

1Newspaper, Oamaru Mail 17 May 1920.

Mr Philip Bevan presided. During an interval the chairman called upon Mr J Wilson to make a presentation of a purse of sovereigns to the guest. Mr Wilson, in doing so, paid a tribute to the sterling qualities and popularity of Mr Dalgleish among his club mates and the community generally, and expressed the pleasure felt at his safe return after fifteen months as a prisoner of war in Germany. Other members extended felicitations to Mr and Mrs Dalgleish."

706. Archibald DALGLIESH

1Newspaper Obituary, Oamaru Mail 22 Dec 1916.

2Newspaper Obituary, North Otago Times 23 Dec 1916.
"ARCHIBALD DALGLEISH.
It was with considerable regret that the friends of Mr Archibald Dalgleish (among the elder generation of North Otago) learnt that he had passed away to "that bourne from which no traveller returns." For some time past hee had been laid aside from his usual activities by a disease which, after great suffering, ended fatally. "Archie," as he was popularly called, was well known in the seventies and eighties as a more than average athlete, he and his brother were always amongst the competitors wherever sports meetings were held, and both were more than usually successful. In later years the deceased gentleman went in for breeding draught stock, and in this undertaking, as well, his exhibits were often to the fore in well-contested rings. He was born at Dumfrieshire, Scotland, and landed, with his parents, in the Dominion in 1858. After the various vicissitudes which were experienced in North Otago by the early settlers, Mr Dalgleish's parents finally settled down on a farm at Papakaio, immediately opposite what is now known as Peebles. For many years the family resided in that locality. Later the deceased was fortunate in drawing a good section in Waikakalii, when it was balloted by the Government, who purchased the estate, which contained 50,000 acres, from the late Mr Allan McLean. Mr Dalgleish remained there for several years, and finally settled on the Boundary Creek Hotel property, where he died. The deceased leaves a widow, two daughters, and two sons, The funeral leaves his late residence at 1.30 p.m. to-day for the Oamaru Cemetery."
