5Newspaper Obituary, Scotsman 21 Apr 1958.
"Obituary
DR A. JOHNSTONE BROWN
Dental surgeon and T.A. officer
The death of Dr Andrew Johnstone Brown (“J.B” to his many friends’, which occurred on April 17, came as a shock, for though his health had been indifferent for a few months, he had the bearing and appearance of a man many years younger (writes a correspondent)
Educated at George Heriot's Schoo!, he became a pupil at the Edinburgh Dental Hospital and School in 1905. During his distlnflxished student career he obtained the Hill Pattison-Struthers bursary for anatomy and physiology.
He was appointed a clinical tutor in the school and Lecturer in Dental Metallurgy, on which subject he wrote a textbook. Later he was also appointed to the charge of the general anaesthetic and radiology departments of the hospital.
ln 1907 he obtained the Triple Qualification and in 1931 the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and was made a Fellow of Dental Surgery when the college instituted that fellowship. In later years he was a Governor of the Dental School and was on the examination board of the Royal College of Surgeons.
A generation of students will regret his passing. They will remember him as a stern disciplinarian, a firm friend, a brilliant teacher, and a wise counsellor.
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CAREER
His interests were not confined to dentistry. He was an enthusiastic curler, a keen Freemason, and a member of the Holyrood High Constables. He had long and meritorious service in the Volunteer Force and the Territorial Army, in which he achieved distinction as great as in his profession. In 1900 he enlisted as a private in the Bearer Company.
During the First World War he served in the Dardanelles and, after being invalided, in the Second Scottish General Hospital and as consulting dental surgeon to the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. Demobilised in 1919, he resumed duty with the 155 Field Ambulance, of which he became commanding officer in 1926. On completion of the tenure of command, he was appointed A.D.M.S. of the 52nd Lowland Division, T.A., with the rank of colonel.
It is a matter of regret that he has not lived to join in celebrating the jubilee of the Territorial Army this year. He will be remembered. however, by those who served with him as a fine example of an officer and a gentleman."
