1268. Mary Alice LOVELESS

1Newspaper Obituary, As written by Rev. J. Craig.
"Mary Alice Loveless was born in the Township of Scarboro, ON, near the village of Ellesmere on October 23, 1861. Her parents and grandparents were old residents of the above township. On her mother's side, she was a descendent of the well-known Thomson family. Her great-grandmother had the reputation of being the first white woman to settle in the township of Scarboro. She grew up on the farm of her father, a healthy, hearty young woman. At the age of eighteen she was thoroughly converted to God and a love of the truth. She continued to witness a good confession and steadily maintain a life that comported with the profession she made and the doctrines of our holy christianity for a period of nineteen years. Miss Mary A. Loveless was married to Rev. W. C. Walls, of the Free Methodist Church near Ellesmere. They travelled together pleasantly and happily for 17 years in the work of the gospel ministry. In that time they had considerable experience in the ups and downs and "the sunnyside" of the itinerancy in the little radical and reform church, the Free Methodists. She ever stood cheerfully and faithfully by her husband in his fifteen years of pastoral work and his two years in the district eldership.
She was the devoted mother of four boys and three girls, all whom survive her. The eldest child is sixteen and the youngest nearly three years of age. As she passed away to her heavenly home from the town of Tilsonburg, ON, January 29, 1899, she exclaimed, "The Lord's will be done." Thus another true soldier of the Lord Jesus Christ laid down the cross and obtained the crown of life. Sister Walls was possessed of a cheery and sunny disposition and with the saving grace of God in her heart, she was perhaps never known to become despondent or morose but was a constant inspiration and true helpmate to her husband in the arduous work of an itinerate preacher.
She had in a remarkable degree the gift of song, and she was one of the most spiritual and effective singers in our denomination. She had the salvation of souls and the cause of God at heart and she went forth with the gospel of song to win souls to shine in the diadem of King Immanuel.
The remains were taken for burial to the Free Methodist Cemetery near Armadale, York Co, ON. The writer conducted the religious services, assisted by Rev. F.M. Wees of Brantford and others, at the residence of Rev. W. C. Walls, Tilsonburg, ON, January 31, 1899. The text used for the ocassion may be found in Rev. 14:13."

Rev Wesley Charles WALLS

1Newspaper Obituary, Written by Rev. James Craig.
"Rev. W.C. Walls, of the West Ontario Conference of the Free Methodist Church, was born November 23, 1858, in King Township, York County, Ontario, Canada, and departed this life at Brantford, Ontario, June 23, 1900. In his youth he worked on a farm. He was converted in the Methodist Church, and was reclaimed from a backslidden state under the labours of Miss Valtina Brown, an evangelist of the Free Methodist Church. A short time after this he was sent to supply a new field in the back woods of Muskoka, Ontario. On his way to this appointment, feeling the responsibility of the work assigned him, he retired for prayer, and kneeling upon one of the rocks that are so plentiful in that country, he received the blessing of entire sanctification. He had quite a revival on this, his first charge, which proved to be the nucleus of the Huntsville circuit that has now three church buildings and a parsonage. He was married to Miss Mary Alice Loveless, November 23, 1881. She died in January, 1899, leaving seven children. On the 21st of March, 1900, he was married to Miss Annie Robertson of Brantford. She faithfully attended him during his last illness, day and night, which was asthma and pneumonia. Brother Walls was admitted to the Canada Conference on trial at Hannon in October, 1881, and in full connection at Armadale in October, 1884. He was one year on the superannuated list. This would make nearly fifteen years he was in the iteneracy from the time of his reception into the conference in full connection. He served the following circuits: Huntsville, 1880-81; Grimsby, 1881-81; Belhaven, 1882-84 and 1889-91; Thedford, 1884-85 and part of 1899-1900; Walsingham, 1885-87; Ellesmere (now Armadale), 1887-89; Keith (now Charlemont), 1891-93; Kelvin, 1893-95; District Elder 1895-98; was superannuated 1897-98; Ebenezer, 1898-99. Brother Walls was one of our most acceptable preachers. While he would not be considered a revivalist, his labors were of a radical type and tended to give solidity and a commendable character to the church. His preaching was not of the flowery order, but he dwelt mostly on the experimental and practical phase of christianity. Those who came in contact with him would be impressed with the evident sincerity and honesty of his purpose in life. The writer officiated at his first marriage; baptized all his children but one; officiated at the funeral of his first wife; closed Brother Walls' eyes after death, and conducted the funeral service at Armadale, on the 25th day of June, where the remains were laid away in the Free Methodist Cemetery to await the resurrection morn; and now tenders his sincere condolence to the bereaved family and friends, and prays that the God of all grace may comfort and sustain and bring them at last to the haven of eternal repose."

1269. William LOVELESS

1Newspaper, Toronto Star 27 Apr 1931.
"Ellesmere, April 27 - To guard the body of his old master, William Loveless, farmer here, who fell dead over his wheelbarrow after a heart attack, a faithful collie stretched himself out beside the inert form and waited. A watchman of the Canadian Explosives Co found them but was unable to approach the body. He was forced to call Tracey and Murray, Mr Loveless' two sons.
Loveless was in his 68th year. He was one of the descendnats of David and Mary Thomson, Scarboro pioneers, who came to Highland Creek in 1795. He is directly descended from WIlliam Loveless, who hewed his little homestead out of virgin forest only a few rods from the present Loveless home."
