"Eskdale & Liddesdale Advertiser - 22 Aug 1956
Mr Walter Glendinning, Grocer
Many expressions of regret were occasioned in the town and district on Monday when news was received of the passing of Mr Walter Glendinning, licensed grocer, Market Place, Langholm.
Seventy-one years of age, deceased was a well known personality in Langholm and Eskdale. Mr Glendinning had been in failing health for some time past and for the last few weeks had been confined to bed.
A native of the burgh, Mr Glendinning served his time with his uncle, the late Mr J.B. Balfour, and subsequently worked at his trade with a firm in Edinburgh. Afterwards he returned to Langholm where he managed his late uncle's business, which he acquired later on his own behalf.
Mr Glendinning was interested in almost every kind of sport and he excelled in every recreational pursuit with which he identified himself. For many years he played for Langholm Thursday Association F.C. and Langholm Hockey Club, while he was also a keen and accomplished performed at curling, and in him there was no better amateur billiards player in the South of Scotland.
His favourite recreation, however, was angling and he was a noted authroity on this sport, not only on the river Esk, but in many other trout and salmon rivers in Scotland.
He was pre-deceased by his wife a considerable number of years ago, and is survived by his only son, Mr J.C. Glendinning, who was associated with him in the business.
The funeral, which was largely attended took place to Langholm Cemetery this afternoon."4Confirmation of Estate.
