3Newspaper Obituary.
"Eskdale & Liddesdale Advertiser - 12 July 1911
Death of Mr J. B. Balfour
We regret to announce the death of Mr J. B. Balfour, merchant, who passed away on Friday forenoon last, after a long and painful illness. As a young man Mr Balfour came from Jedburgh to take up the business that has been with the exception of a short interval since associated with his name. His health failing in those early years he embarked in a sailing ship for the Cape, and after spending sone time on shore proceeded on a voyage to New Zealand and Australia, returning home after an absence of nearly two years, completely restored. The business being again transferred to him he resumed his connection with the town, which until his death was unbroken. He entered into the public life of the town, being for many years associated with the Police Commissioners. He also took a deep interest in educational matters, and was over and over again returned as a member of the School Board, being appointed to several of its committees, and ever manifesting insight and ability in the concerns of our Academy and Schools. Other local interests also claimed his time and competency, notably his captaincy of the Fire Brigade for many years. An enthusiastic bowler he was secretary of the Old Town Bowling Club, and did much on its behalf, actively interested in its welfare and ever eager to record its success in matches and tournaments. As a mark of respect the green was closed for play on Friday and Saturday. He was an ardent student of horticulture, and for very many years held the important position as President of Langholm Horticultural Society. As an honorary member of Langholm Football Club, Mr Balfour took a keen interest in its affairs, and had the honour of opening the Club's new field at Milntown when play was transferred from the Castleholm. Music too was his passion. Gifted with a deep rich bass voice, he was ever willing to dedicate his musical abilities to public service. The local Town Band was for many years trained by him without fee or reward. In his earlier years he was leader of Psalmody in the North U.P. Church, and in recognition of his services there he received a handsome gold watch. His Glee Party was much sought after in the outlying districts as well as in the immediate neighbourhood. He also trained the choir in the Episcopal Church, of whose communion he was a member. His interests in public life were varied in their nature, and whatever he undertook he did with all the concentrated energy of his manhood. In all the varied organisations he was esteemed, respected, and honoured for unswerving fidelity to his convictions of right. Honesty and uprightness and integrity were the characteristics that impressed themselves on all who were associated with him in either public or private life. A moral earnestness and a deep religiousness underlay all his activities; benevolence, sympathy, and kindly deeds expressed the virtues of his heart. His last illness was fought with much acute suffering, but he bore it with an unmurmering patience that many may emulate yet few excel.
The funeral took place to Staplegordon Churchyard on Monday. Langholm Town Band headed the funeral procession from the Market Place, playing the Dead March in "Saul." The cortege was followed by a large representation of townspeople, and a short service was held in the Episcopal Chapel.
There were several beautiful wreaths, one of which was given by the members of Langholm Old Bowling Club, another by members of the Episcopal Chapel choir, and others by relatives and friends."

"FAIRLEY At Arkinholm Terrace Langholm (suddenly) on the 15th inst, John Fairley, retired bank accountant, aged 76 years."

3Newspaper Obituary, Eskdale & Liddesdale Advertiser - 19 Feb 1930.
"Sudden Death of Mr John Fairley
The death occurred suddenly on Saturday night of Mr John Fairley, retired bank accountant, Arkinholm Terrace. Mr Fairley was walking home up the Kirkwynd in the early evening, and when near to the E.U. Church, he collapsed, and fell heavily on the roadway. He was stunned and badly cut on the face. Help was quickly procured, and he was carried into the house of Mr Milligan. After being attended there, he was removed home later, but died about 11 o'clock. Mr Fairley was a native of Edinburgh. He left there at the age of 14, going to Galashiels, where he served his apprenticeship to the banking profession, and came to Langholm 58 years ago to take up the post in the National Bank. He retired from the bank a few years ago, but he had yet active work to interest him, as he has been secretary of Langholm Gas Company for well-nigh 50 years. Until his retirement from the bank, Mr Fairley was not closely identified with public affairs. He, however, offered himself for election to Langholm Town Council and became a member, later being elevated to the Bench in the position of a Bailie. Bowling was his chief recreation, and he was the oldest member of Langholm Old Club, which he joined immediately he came to Langholm, and when the green was on part of the ground which the Hope Hospital now occupies. He was also one of the presidents of the Club. Mr Fairley was 76 years of age, and was predeceased by his wife a few years ago. He leaves behind him a family of five daughters, four of whom are married; his two sons being killed in the war. A man of ready wit and genial character, and of generous-hearted nature, Mr Fairley was a great favourite in the community. By his own wish, the funeral to Staplegordon yesterday was private."
