Our obituary today contains an intimation of the death on Monday afternoon of Mr Archibald Glendinning, ironmonger, at the age of 76. The deceased had been in failing health for some time, but was able to move about the house until Saturday last, when he was attacked with blindness, and on Sunday became unconscious. He lingered in this state until Monday afternoon, when he passed quietly away. Mr Glendinning was born at Effgill in 1811, and served his apprenticeship as a joiner in Eskdalemuir. He then went to Newcastleton as foreman to Mr Douglas, joiner there. During his stay he built the railway bridge near Wetheral. In 1841 he came to Langholm and began business as an ironmonger in the premises now occupied by Mr Ritchie, chemist. In 1855 he built the property at the foot of Kirkwynd, where he has since resided and carried on his business. When Whita Well was brought into the town he took a great interest in the scheme, and laid the pipes for the first supply. 2Newspaper Obituary, Eskdale & Liddesdale Advertiser January 18, 1871.
"DEATH OF DR GLENDINNING -
We regret to have to record the death of Dr Glendinning, of Bingley, which took place at his residence there on the 12th inst. Dr Glendinning died at the early age of twenty-nine years, after a stay in Bingley of two years duration, during which he secured, as much by his kindliness and gentleness of disposition as by his excellence as practitioner, the esteem of all with whom he came in contact. His success in Bingley had been very considerable, and only a week or two before his death he had been appointed medical officer to the Keighley Union, for the Bingley district. Dr Glendinning received his professional training in the Medical and Surgical schools of Edinburgh, of the University of which city he was a graduate. His career as a student was characterised by great industry and steady application. Although the state of his health had not been satisfactory no suspicions were entertained that his death was so near. For some days he had been suffering from a disorder of the kidneys, which resulted only a few hours before his death in grave symptoms of blood poisoning, and violent congestion of the lungs set in. After a brief interval of great suffering death closed the scene, in spite of all efforts to relieve him. Dr Glendinning's loss will be widely and deeply felt in Bingley and neighbourhood - Keighley News:- [On Saturday last the mortal remains of Dr Douglas Glendinning, son of our respected townsman, Mr A. Glendinning, ironmonger, were brought from Bingley to Langholm by train, and conveyed by hearse from the railway-station, accompanied by a few sympathising friends, to his father's house about eight o'clock p.m. The effect of the slow and solemn procession through the dark streets was very impressive. The greatest sympathy is felt with the family who have been so suddenly and unexpectedly bereaved of one on whom they might well look with pride and hope. As in Bingley so also in Langholm, Dr Glendinning was esteemed and beloved by all who knew him, either professionally or as a friend or neighbour. The funeral took place at two o'clock yesterday, and was attended by a large number of friends and acquaintances of the deceased. All the shops in the neighbourhood were closed."

"One past away this morning, the 18th inst., to the other world who had been long and widely known around here Mr. John Glendinning, aged about 87 years. The deceased was actually the oldest resident of the place, and perhaps of the whole neighborhood. His father, James Glendinning, was among the early settlers who invaded the bush in this locality. He located on the lot which now, forms a portion of the westerly side of the village corporation. The log-house which he erected was near to the present residence of the deceased, John Glendinning, which erection, being the first building raised within the boundaries may be said to have been the foundation of the future town. The deceased, John Glendinning, having spent his earlier years in the bush, was well acquainted with the troubles and privations incident to the early settler's life. Being possessed naturally of an obliging and generous disposition, and, which is usually termed "a handy man," either at the raising of a house, or in the doctoring of a sick animal, his advice and services of one kind and another were often sought after by his neighbors, and always given willingly. He did not figure as a politician or public man, although he held firmly to the Reform party, being one of the old stock of Scottish Presbyterian Reformers; but he was in other respects a very influential man for a long period in the settlement, and there are but few old residents who have not been benefitted by his advice and services. He brought up a large family, and his home was the centre of hospitality for a wide circle of relations; in fact all who called upon him were at home. He leaves behind him Mrs. Glendinning and sons and daughters, Dr. Glendinning of this place being one of his sons. Rest in peace."
