"Thomas Murray Welsh (FRCSE) (1921-1996) Former consultant cardiothoracic surgeon Glasgow (b 1921; q Glasgow 1944; FRCSE), died of myocardial infarction on 15 November 1996. Initially his work was primarily concerned with pulmonary tuberculosis, endemic in south west Scotland in the late 1950s. He was innovative in modifying many thoracic surgical procedures and also devised an inflatable immersion bath for producing modified hypothermia This was invaluable in treating certain congenital defects before the introduction of cardiopulmonary bypass using pump oxygenators in the early 1960s. Until his retirement in 1982 he also used the newly introduced techniques for valve replacements and total correction of complex congenital defects. His two leisure pursuits were angling and golf. Predeceased by his wife, he leaves two daughters (one a doctor); two sons; and grandchildren. [John M Reid]."
