John Mills MACKENZIE

1Newspaper, The Times Moncton 11 Dec 1889.
"John Mills McKENZIE, mayor of Moncton, was born in this parish, 27th April 1825. He is on his paternal side of Scotch descent, his grandfather having come from Scotland many years ago and settled in the Maritime Provinces. His father, William McKENZIE was born in Halifax, N.S. and his mother, Charlotte MILLS of English descent, first saw the light in Moncton, having been the first child by English parents born in the locality in which her father and mother resided after coming from Poughkeepsie, New York at the close of the American revolutionary war. Mr. McKenzie received a sound English education and was engaged teaching school in Westmorland and Albert counties from 1842 to 1851. He afterwards engaged in mercantile pursuits which he followed for nine years. He wound up affairs of the old Westmorland Bank having been appointed by the Supreme Court of New Brunswick and subsequently was assignee under the Dominion insolvency act. Mr. McKenzie took an active part in the old tannery business; also in the organization of the Moncton gas light and water company, the sugar refining company and the cotton manufacturing company. He is prominently connected with the masonic order and helped to organize Keith Lodge and Botsford Royal Arch chapter. He represented Ward 2 for several years at the council board, was elected mayor in 1887, was re-elected in 1888 by acclamation and was returned for a third term in March. Mayor McKenzie is a Baptist."
