"George Lorimer Struck by Auto and Killed
(From Emmetsburg Democrat)
Our many citizens who knew George Lorimer of Jack Creek township during pioneer days, when he was a frequent visitor to Emmetsburg, will regret very much to learn that he was killed Monday while crossing one of the business streets of Estherville. He was struck by an auto driven by Leo Sanders, district manager of the Hutchinson Ice Cream company, who frequently visits Emmetsburg. Mr. Sanders says he did not see Mr. Lorimer when he struck him. Several who were on the streets rushed to pick up the injured man but he died before a physician could arrive.

Mr. Lorimer came from Scotland to Emmetsburg in 1882, which was 48 years ago. Later he settled in Jack Creek township. He was thrifty and became prosperous. He was an excellent farmer and a high class gentleman. He often came to this city to celebrate with his native countrymen of Scotland the Robert Burns anniversary. He was 71 year of age. He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mildred.

After moving to Estherville, Mr. Lorimer became an employee of the Estherville Grocery company. It is sad to think that at the close of his long and highly creditable career, he lost his life under the unfortunate circumstances mentioned. His many friends in this county offer sincere sympathy to Mrs. Lorimer and Miss Lorimer in their bereavement."

"Lorimer Services Friday
Well Known Local Lady Passed Away Wednesday Morning After Long Illness
Born in Scotland

After an illness of several months Mrs. George Lorimer passed away at her home on north Eighth street late Wednesday morning. She was 71 years old at the time of her death.

Elizabeth Borthwick was born near Thornhill, Dunfriesshire, Scotland, on May 29, 1869. Her parents were gentlemen farmers of the middle class in Scotland and she was given all the opportunities afforded the children in this class. She received her early education in private girls' schools in Scotland.

Together with her parents, Mrs. Lorimer migrated to America in 1881. The family located in the Scottish community near Emmetsburg.

A few years after coming to this country she was united in marriage with George Lorimer. Three children were born to the couple, George, Jr., and Margaret having preceded their mother in death. Mr. Lorimer died several years ago from injuries he received when struck by a car. One daughter, Miss Mildred Lorimer, survives her mother.

Mrs. Lorimer joined the local Presbyterian church in 1914, shortly after the family moved here to make their home. She was one of the organizers of the Presbyterian church in the Scottish settlement near Emmetsburg.

Although poor health for the past several years has forced Mrs. Lorimer into a life of retirement she always took an active part in the church and community affairs while her health permitted. Her many friends in this community have missed her from their circles and regret to learn of her passing away.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the Lorimer home at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. Claude Fausnaugh in charge. Burial will be in the Oak Hill cemetery."

"Death of A Popular Resident
Miss Margaret Lorimer Called Suddenly Thursday
Was Admired By All
Funeral Services Held Saturday Morning From the Home of Parents

This city was greatly shocked to learn of the death of Miss Margaret Lorimer at a local hospital on Thursday [December 1, 1921] of last week. Miss Lorimer had submitted to an operation on Wednesday and passed away the following day. It was not known by her many friends at this time and that added greatly to the blow. She was one of the best known and most popular young ladies of Estherville, admired and respected by all and her sudden taking away in the bloom of young womanhood is one of the mysteries of this life.

She was a daughter of Mr. and Mr. George Lorimer of this city. Born in Emmetsburg she moved with her parents when a babe to the farm in Jack Creek township where the family resided for many years, respected and honored by all who knew them. They moved to Estherville several years ago Miss Margaret attended the rural schools near her farm home and after moving to Estherville, completed her school course in this city. She at different times had held responsible positions around the city. She possessed all the charms of young womanhood. Happy and cheerful upon all occasions and with a personality that made her a favorite with any crowd, she will be sorely missed from this circle of friends and the entire community.

Funeral services were held from the home last Saturday morning at half past ten. Rev. Voorhies assisted by Rev. Alvin Scollay Hock had charge of the services. The Presbyterian choir sang several beautiful selections, Fred Albertson sang a solo. The pall bearers were H. N. Jensen, of Ringsted, Don Kirby, Ray Bryan, George Booth, John Greig and Don Pullen of this city. She was laid to rest in the Oak Hill cemetery. The bereaved relatives have the deepest sympathy of the entire community in this hour of grief and sorrow."

"Popular Girl Passes Away
Margaret Lorimer Who Has Spent Life Time n county Dies Suddenly
Resides Here Past Few Years
Has Been Ill For Some Time and Passed Away After She Had Undergone Operation

The many friends of Miss Margaret Lorimer were severely shocked last Thursday when the news spread rapidly of her sudden death. Miss Lorimer has been in rather poor health for some time past. A short time ago she decided to have an operation, and on Tuesday last she entered the Birney hospital. The operation over, she seemed to be recovering nicely when about 11 o'clock on the day of her death she became suddenly worse and passed away shortly after 12 o'clock. While her constitution was not strong it was not thought she was in such a serious condition. Miss Lorimer was in the street the day before greeting her friends as usual. The day of the operation she arose and went to the hospital apparently not thinking of the seriousness of the case.

Miss Lorimer has resided in this county with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Lorimer since childhood. For years they resided on their farm in Jack Creek township. They moved to this city about seven years ago where they have since resided. She has been employed in the Gardston Hat Shop of late. She was a genial young lady with pleasing manners and a host of friends. She was the kind of a young lady with an ever pleasant smile, and a kind word for all.

The funeral services were held from the home on Saturday morning, the Rev. Voorhies assisted by the rev. Hock officiating. The remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery."

After the outbreak of the present war he returned to this country for special duty at the War Office, where he remained for two years. "D. F. BORTHWICK DIED ON SUNDAY
Highly Esteemed Citizen Passes Away At His Home
Daniel F. Borthwick, one of the best known and most highly respected and esteemed citizens of this section, died Sunday morning at his home at 613 Union street, aged 78 years,
Mr. Borthwick was born in Portsmouth, Sept. 23, 1858, the son of James and Clara (Whidden) Borthwick. In 1879 he established the D. F. Borthwick dry goods store which he continued to conduct up to the time of his death.
He took an active part in all civic affairs and was deeply interested in the work of the North church of which he had been a deacon for many years. He did many deeds of charity and his greatest pleasure throughout his entire life came in doing good to others, and many are the people of this community who are deeply indebted to him for his many acts of kindness in times of need or distress. He did everything in his power to make others happy, but would take no credit for his fine work and was always desirous that no publicity be attached to his many charitable acts. No man in the history of Portsmouth; will probably be missed to a greater extent than will Mr. Borthwick,
For nearly 50 years he had served as treasurer of the Howard Benevolent Society and was a trustee in the Portsmouth hospital, Chase Home For Children, Portsmouth Y. M. C. A. and the Demerritt fund which provides scholarships for worthy college students here. He was greatly interested in everything pertaining to Portsmouth and was president of the Portsmouth Historical Society and a director of the Portsmouth Athenaeum, He served several terms as police commissioner of Portsmouth.
For the past 42 years he had been a trustee of the Portsmouth Savings Bank.
His wife, Mary E. Borthwick, died last Sept. 13. Mr. Borthwick is survived by one brother, James A. Borthwick, one sister, Mrs. Ora M. Drummond and three nieces, Mrs. Susan Borthwick Hunt, Mrs. Eloise Borthwick Wilkes and Miss Florence Cleaves,
Funeral services will be held at the North Congregational church Tuesday at 2.30 p. m. Please omit flowers."

2Newspaper, Portsmouth Herald NH 23 Dec 1936.
"D. F. BORTHWICK LAID AT REST
Following his own request Daniel F. Borthwick was laid at rest in Harmony Grove Cemetery as the sun was setting Tuesday afternoon. The funeral, which was held at 2.30 from the North Church, was largely attended, and during the period of the service stores and business establishments in the city were closed as a tribute to the memory of one of the outstanding residents of the city. Flags were placed at half staff.
The large number in attendance was evidence of the high esteem in which Mr. Borthwick was held by not only the people in this city but in many other communities as well.
Amos Moody, church organist, played organ selections before and after the service. Rev. Arthur A. Rouner, pastor of the church of which Mr. Borthwick had served as a deacon for more than 50 years, conducted the service. In his eulogy he said in part:
"In the death of Daniel F. Borthwick has lost one of its most constructive and valuable citizens and the North Church one of its most exemplary characters and faithful and devoted members. For many years he had waged & stout-hearted and uncomplaining battle with ill-health, but the frailties of increasing years have taken their toll, and his mortal body is on its way back to the elements from which it came, and his immortal soul has returned at last to the God who gave it.
"His business career has been long and notable. For 57 years he has labored amongst us as a successful and respected merchant. This success has been achieved, not at the expense of others, but because of a needed and valued contribution to the life of our community. He began with nothing but his own rare qualities of mind and spirit and a large capacity for sustained effort and he acquired large means and withall the admiration and affection of his fellows. He was a Christian business man to whom trade was more than a matter of profit and loss, and who, whether in prosperity or in depression, comported him with fairness to his customers, with generous consideration to his competitors, and with fatherly interest toward his employees.
"His character. was remarkable for its strength, sincerity and modesty, its simplicity and yet its many-sidedness. The Biblical writer had such as he in mind when he wrote, "In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength." He possessed an indomitable will, indeed it seemed sheer will power, certainly it was not physical strength that carried him through these past dozen years. He was temperate and simple almost to asceticism in his personal habits. His dignity, personal poise, quiet assurance were balanced by an altogether remarkable degree of thoughtfulness, considerateness, and appreciation of others. Probably no other person in our city exceeded him in his constant and generous giving of his money, his time, his thought and himself. It was plainly evident to those who knew him intimately that his chief joy lay in helping other people to be useful, comfortable and happy.”
Ushers at the church were E. Curtis Matthews, Roland I. Noyes, John B. Mooney, William C. Walton, Jr., and Richmond Margeson.
The employees of the D. F. Borthwick Store attended in a body, occupying, the seats in the front of the church. All of the trustees of the Portsmouth Savings bank, of which Mr. Borthwick was a member, attended together with the employees of the bank. Officers of all of the local banks were represented, as were the Portsmouth Historical Society, Portsmouth Hospital, Portsmouth Athenaeum, and the Howard Benevolent Society.
Bearers were William C. Walton, G. Ralph Laighton, George B. Lord, Norman E. Rand, Arthur B. Duncan, William E. Maddock, Edwin P. Churchill and Frank P. Hunt.
The committal service was conducted at the grave by Mr. Rouner. Burial was in charge of J. Verne Wood."
