1Newspaper, Rathdrum Tribune Fri 17 Jan 1919.
"Sad News From Midvale.
Word was received Wednesday by Mrs. A. O. Skinner from her husband at Midvale, Idaho, announcing the deaths by influenza of Harvey J. Borthwick, and son Bryan, and daughter Jane, who resided at Council. Other members of the family were stated to be ill with the disease.
H. J. Borthwick and family were formerly of Rathdrum, leaving in 1912 after having been here for twenty years or more. Mr. Borthwick was deputy assessor of Kootenai county twenty years ago and was elected assessor in 1900, serving until 1903. He was later engaged in the real estate business and served at various times as village trustee. He had a wide acquaintance throughout the county and the family was highly esteemed by their neighbors. Jane, the eldest child, was a school teacher and clerk, and Bryan had charge of the farm at Council the past few years. Three younger daughters and one son survive with their mother, who is a sister of Chas. and John Green of Rathdrum prairie. Mr. Borthwick is also survived by his brother, Wm. R. Borthwick, and two sisters, Mrs. Ben S. Wood and Mrs. John Crenshaw, formerly of Rathdrum and well known to old timers here."

Deputy Assessor Borthwick received the sad message on Wednesday afternoon that his little girl, Mary, was dying. He immediately started for his home, which is three miles south of town, but before he reached it the little one was dead. The child had been sick but a short time, but was not considered dangerously ill until a short time before its death, when it was attacked by a violent convulsion from which it never rallied. The funeral services were held here on Friday from the residence, Rev. Hodgson officiating. The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Borthwick extend sympathy to them in this sad hour of their affliction."
