723. Janet THOMSON

1Newspaper Obituary, Thur 6 Mar 1930.
"It was with the deepest sorrow that the people of Saltcoats and District learned of the death, on Saturday evening, March 1st of Mrs. Alexander Weir, one of the pioneer settlers of this community. Mrs. Weir had been in poor health for the past year, but grew gradually worse during the winter and was confined to her bed about a month ago. As she was slowly sinking, her daughters, Mrs. Rusk of Bredenbury and Mrs. McFadden of Winnipeg, were sent for. The local doctors were in attendance, but in spite of all that could be done, she passed away quietly on Saturday evening.
The funeral, which was very largely attended, was held from Saltcoats United Church, on Wednesday afternoon at half past two o’clock. The service was conducted by Rev. H.L. Dougan, assisted by Rev. C.H. Whitmore of Bredenbury. Mrs. Mollard sang “One by One”. Interment was made in Saltcoats Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Messrs. T. Taylor and Churchill of Bredenbury and A. MacGregor, S. Croley, H. Johnson and E. Gamble of Saltcoats.
Mrs. Alexander Weir, nee Janet Thomson, was born in Ontario June 9th, 1862. She was of pioneer stock, her great grandmother having been the first white woman to settle in Scarboro Township, where she came to live in 1792. The late Mrs. Weir came west with her husband and family, and settled in Saltcoats district April 7th, 1902. She took an active part in the community life, and endeared herself to all who knew her. She was a faithful worker in the Women’s Missionary Society, being made a life member in 1916. She also served ably in the Ladies Aid Society and other societies of the Presbyterian and later the United Church. She has been called to higher service after a life of faithful devotion to duty.
She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, two sons, William of Bredenbury and Fred of Saltcoats, two daughters, Mrs. Rusk of Bredenbury and Mrs. McFadden of Winnipeg, a brother in Ontario and a sister who came from Ontario to be present at the funeral."
