"HARVEY—McLEOD

A very picturesque wedding was solemnised at the Presbyterian Church, Whangarei, on November 1. The principals were Anne Frances (Panny), youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs N. McLeod, of Maungaturoto, and Gordon, son of Mr and Mrs Harvey, Palmerston North. The Rev. W. Elliott was the officiating minister. The bride was given away by her father, and made a charming picture in a slim fitting gown of magnolia satin. The veil was arranged with orange blossom, and she carried a bouquet of roses. The bridesmaids, Miss Maud Roberts and Miss Marjorie Skullan, were frocked in lemon organdie, with quaintly, becoming hats of petals and organdie. Their bouquets were of blue larkspur. Messrs M. Sheriff and J. McLeod supported the bridegroom. A small reception was later held at the Commercial Hotel, where Mrs McLeod, as hostess, was gowned in green and black. Mrs Harvey chose an ensemble of navy and scarlet. Mr and Mrs Gordon Harvey will make their home in Palmerston North,."

"OBITUARY.
PETER SMITH, STONY CREEK.
AETAT 86.
The firm of Smith Bros., of Stirling, farmers, was one well known to the earlier generations at Stirling. Douce, quiet, steady working, cheerful men they were, wholly interested in Clydesdale horse breeding and farming in the approved Scotch way. Their well-appointed teams were present at many ploughing matches, and horses and harness reflected the care and attention lavished upon them. Hale, friendly, hospitable people they were, and now the last of the firm has passed away to his rest at the hale old age of 86. His passing hence was in consonence with his general characteristics. He went off quietly on Friday morning without a struggle. He had always, been a strong, healthy man, and up to the time of his death had given no-sign that death was just at hand. On Thursday he was out and about, keenly .interested in all details of the farm work on his farm, and except that advancing years had left him frail he was in possession of all his faculties, and able to be out and about the house. On Thursday evening he retired to bed as usual, and woke about 4 a.m. to ask the time. His wife mentioned the hour, and then fell asleep, to waken at 6 o'clock to find her husband dead beside her, having passed away without a move or a sound. The subject of our notice was the youngest of the Smith Bros' firm. He came out with his oldest brother, the late William Smith, and a sister, the late Mrs McKenzie, to Otago in the Larkins in 1849. They had selected land in the North East Valley before their arrival, but only remained there some seven years, when they moved to Stirling on land they had acquired there. The late Mr Joseph Smith joined them there, and thus the firm was formed. Thirty-one years ago the late Mr Peter Smith married, and' took up his residence at his ridge farm near Stony Creek School, and has remained there ever since. The Stirling farm was subdivided between the other two brothers, both of whom were married. The deceased married a daughter of the late Mr George Harvey, of Stirling, and a family of two sons and five daughters with his widow are left to mourn the loss of a quiet, homely, exemplary husband and father, and to them the genuine sympathy of many friends has gone out. The late Mr Smith was born at Glentannar, near Ballater, Dee Side, Aberdeen, and was brought up in his youth to farm work, and this he at once entered on when he came to the Dominion 61 years ago. He was a fine stamp of farm settler, and devoted his energies entirely to the work. He took little or no part in public life, being by nature an unobtrusive man, but was an esteemed elder of the Stirling Church. All the family are presently at home on the farm, the youngest being yet in her teens. The oldest son, Mr Peter Smith, jun., has just recently returned from an extensive tour of America and Great Britain, having been absent some years. One of the daughters is preparing for the teaching profession, and the others, with one exception, assist in home duties. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon. and a large number of mourners followed the mortal remains to their last resting place in the Balclutha cemetery, thus, showing their regard and esteem for a kindly sterling man, a good neighbour, and an admirable stamp of settler."

2Newspaper Announcement, Evening Star NZ 28 Nov 1899.
"At the inquest on Robert Stewart, farmer, of Totara Valley, the jury returned a verdict of accidental death from a gunshot. It was not a case of suicide, as supposed, the hammer of the gun having caught in a creeper as the deceased was going out of his door."

3Newspaper Obituary, Temuka Leader 28 Nov 1899.
"The late Mr Robert E. Stewart, whose sad death is recorded elsewhere, belonged to a class of settlers who have done much more for the country than is generally recognised. After arriving in the colony he worked as most young agriculturists do, and after a time took to contracting and cropping. He was successful and was able to take up a good piece of country south of Makikihi. After a year or two of prosperity, poor crops and poor prices caused him to lose nearly all his savings. He was fortunate, enough, however, to secure a lease of an educational reserve at Totara Valley, formerly occupied by Mr John Johnstone. Here his energies found plenty of scope, for the reserve was not in the best of order, and a part of it was a very bad swamp. To-day it is one of the best farms in the district, presenting a wonderful contrast to what it was some 20 years ago. Mr Stewart was also able to secure a freehold in the adjoining valley, which he intended should be his final abode. He married the daughter of Mr Dickson, then manager, for the Levels Company, of the Totara Valley station, and now of the Cave, and leaves a widow and comparatively young family to mourn their loss. He was a kindly, unassuming man of sterling worth, and, needless to say, his loss will be greatly felt amongst his more immediate neighbours."

2662. Robert Erskine STEWART

1Newspaper, Temuka Leader 3 May 1894.
"Fatal Accident.— On Tuesday an inquest was held at Totara Valley on the body of Robert Erskine Stewart, aged 2 years and 9 months, who was found in a creek on his father's farm on Monday morning. Mr E. Acton, J.P. acting-coroner presided, and the following were the jury: —Messrs M. Cochrane (foreman), J.Miller, P. O'Connell, P. Fraser, W. Douglas, and H. Rodgers. Evidence was led by Mounted Constable Crawford to the following effect: —The deceased was playing outside the house while Mrs Stewart and a girl, Annie Hyndman, were washing. He was missed inside five minutes, and they went in search of him, the girl finding him face downwards in a running creek a short distance from the house, the water at the spot being about four feet deep. The girl brought the body to the house at once, and Mrs Stewart tried various remedies to restore animation without success ; also sending for a doctor and invoking the aid of a neighbour, Mr J. Miller. Dr Kronecker arrived from Pleasant Point about two and a-half hours after the body was taken from the water, and on arrival found the body warm, but all his efforts to bring the boy round proved unavailing. The jury returned a verdictof " Accidental death." Widespread sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs fetewart in their deep distress. The child was the youngest of a family of three. Mr Stewart was at Fairlie at the time of the accident."

2Newspaper, Press NZ 9 Aug 1934.
"Accidentally Drowned
That Frank Harvey Stewart was accidentally drowned at Totara Valley on August 7, he having apparently accidentally fallen off his horse into a pool on his farm, was the verdict given by the coroner, Mr C. R. Orr Walker, at an Inquest yesterday.
James Dickson Stewart, brother of the dead man, gave evidence that Frank Stewart had lost both feet at the war, but was, nevertheless, a good horseman. He had mentioned having giddy turns in the mornings. Accompanied by Walter Lund, a farm hand, witness found his brother lying face down in a pool in seven inches of water. His hat was still on his head.

Walter Lund gave evidence that the reins were still over the horse's neck when found, and the right stirrup was over the saddle.
Dr. P. B. Benham said that death was due to drowning. Stewart was unconscious when he fell, or he became unconscious as a result of striking his head on some ice. It was more probable that he suffered a seizure before falling."

3Newspaper Obituary, Timaru Herald 14 Aug 1934.
"MR FRANK HARVEY STEWART.
When word came of the sudden passing of Mr Frank Harvey Stewart, many hearts were touched with sadness. The many who made up the long cortege was evidence enough of the esteem and respect accorded him by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Esteem! Respect! Good words, but inadequate to fully express the real affection his unfailing kindliness and gentle huinour had won for him among all sections of the community. Lacking nothing in sympathy for the hurts of others, he could laugh so joyously with them in their happy moments. One sensed a wide and gentle tolerance for the frailties of man, coupled with a keen perception of the qualities in his fellows. To the forefront of his many fine attributes stood out the splendid courage with which he faced the terrible handicap of his war wounds. “Smiling through” rightly describes him. To friendship, woven of the very substance of life he held the master key, and his friendliness lingers in memory as a fragrance of something beautiful. Memory drifts back over the first years at school, onward through high school the stressful years of war, the fretful after years, and always unforgotten, springs to memory the kindliness and courage with which Frank Harvey Stewart carried through. To the end a good comrade to all his wide circle of friends."
