4Newspaper Obituary, Scotsman 01 Apr 1896.
"The Late Mr John Grant Galashiels - By the death of Mr John Grant, bookseller, Galashiels, a widely-known and much-esteemed Border man has been removed. The deceased, who was seventy-two years of age, was born at Trinlay Knowe, on the borders of Selkirk and Peebles shires, and in early life commenced business in Galashiels. For many years he took an active and intelligent interest in the affairs of the district in which he lived, and for the long period of some thrity years he had acted with singular fidelity as local correspondent of the Scotsman, to whose columns he was a frequent contributor on antiquarian, fishing, and other subjects. He was possessed of much native shrewdness and sound judgement, and had a natural facility for acquiring information, He was a keen angler, and was a recognised authority on fishing questions. He had an extensive knowledge of the Tweed Acts, an intimate acquaintance with anglers' grievances, and interested himself warmly in fishing reforms. About thirty-five years ago he published a pamphlet on the subject which had considerable circulation. He took a useful part in all political, municipal, and educational questions, and his strict integrity and thorough impartiality caused his opinions to be generally respected. Being of an exceedingly amiable and genial disposition, he drew around him a large circle of personal friends, by whom he will be much missed. In politics he was a Liberal, and on the Home Rule split he joined the Unionist party, of whom he was a staunch supporter. He had been a total abstainer for close upon half-a-century. Mr Grant is survived by his widow and several grown-up sons and daughters, one of his sons being Magistrate of his native town."

5Newspaper Obituary, Southern Reporter 02 Apr 1896.
"The Late Mr John Grant - An active and useful life had just been closed by the death of this well-known and respected townsman. For a good many months he had been suffering from an internal disease, through which he was latterly laid aside from business and his strength declined, and he died calmly and peacefully at a late hour on Monday night. Mr Grant's career was marked by many points of interest, and it afforded a good example of what may be attained by industry and energy and having a worthy object in life. He was born at Trinlyknowe, on the height above Thornielee, overlooking the Tweed and Caddon Water. He got his elementary education at a small adventure school at "The Luggy," near Clovenfords, and when a lad he took to drystone dyke building with his father and brothers. He early manifested a strong liking for books and read extensively, and his desire to improve his education may be judged of by the fact that in the winter time, when laid aside from dyke-building—and this after his marriage—he attended the day school at Caddonfoot, where he acquired an acquaintance with other branches of learning not taught at the humbler school up the vale. In 1861, when failing health had caused him to abandon out-door labour, he removed with his family to Galashiels, where he took to book-canvassing; and after a time he rented a shop in High Street, and commenced business as a bookseller and newsagent. Even when living in Caddon Water he had been in the way of supplying paragraphs to the Scotsman; and on the late Mr Alexander Fisher, of the Border Advertiser, leaving for America, Mr Grant was readily accepted as his successor to act as local correspondent for the Scotsman. Then, when nearly forty years of age, he set himself to acquire a knowledge of shorthand, and was not long in becoming proficient in the practice of the art. From that time (1866) he continued to discharge his duties with great efficiency. He had a natural aptitude for getting hold of news, and he spared no pains in arriving at the facts which were worth being chronicled. He acted for nearly the same length of time as our own correspondent in Galashiels, and we can heartily endorse the opinion recorded in yesterday’s Scotsman as to his shrewdness, sound judgment, and singular fidelity. Mr Grant always considered that his press engagements precluded him from undertaking office on any of the public boards of the town; so that while intimately acquainted with the business of them all, and taking a hearty interest in them, his part was that of a recorder of their proceedings and a critic rather than of an administrator. At the time of the Disruption he was connected with Ladhope Church, and came out with its minister, Mr Falconer, and many others of the members, identifying himself with the congregation then formed in connection with the Free Church. Afterwards he joined the East U. P. Church, and at the time when a third congregation was talked of he was in hearty sympathy with the movement, and was one of the office-bearers who volunteered to transfer their services to the new South congregation. On the Rev. Walter Brown leaving the pastorate of that church for the charge at Braid Church, Edinburgh, Mr Grant went back to Ladhope Free Church, in whose affairs, as in those of the South U. P., he took a warm interest, as a member of session and a teacher in the Sunday-school. Mr Grant was a life-long abstainer. In politics he was a sound Liberal, but left the party on Mr Gladstone's introduction of his Home Rule scheme, and was ever afterwards in close sympathy with the Liberal Unionists. In early life Mr Grant was married to Mary, second daughter of Mr James Lambert, factor at Yair; and their golden wedding was celebrated in April of last year by a happy family gathering, and many of the friends of the couple were present to add their congratulations and good wishes on the auspicious occasion. The deceased is survived by his widow, three sons, and four daughters. Four members of the family are abroad, one in London, and one son (Bailie James Grant) and a daughter are residing in the town."
