"The LATE Wm. HYSLOP — Early on Thursday morning, after a very brief illness, Mr Wm. Hyslop, baker, Market Place, breathed his last. Mr Hyslop a native of Canonbie, being a son of the late Mr Hyslop, farmer Kerr. He was the oldest merchant in Langholm. having been in business, and occupied the same premises, for the long period of over 49 years. For a number of years he was a member of the Police Commission, and took an active interest in the burgh's affairs. He was likewise an elder in the North U.P. Church, and was very highly respected both in the town and throughout the surrounding district. In the North U.P. Church on Sunday the Rev. W. Ballantyne alluded to the sad event in the course of an impressive sermon from James iv 14 - "Ye know not what shall be on the morrow?" He said a vacant place in that church enforced the lesson of the text with solemn emphasis. One who was a fellow-worshipper with them last Lord's Day had now been for three days in the land of spirits, worshipping he trusted in the upper sanctuary, and from his empty place there came the solemn admonition to each of them, "Be ye also ready. Ye know not what shall be on the morrow" To them or to him that might be, as last Sabbath was to their departed brother, the last Sabbath they should have on earth. It was well for them to notice that God had kept the future hid from them. - The funeral took place in Langholm Old Churchyard on Monday and was an unusually large one, both town and country being well represented. As a mark of respect to the deceased nearly all the shops in the vicinity of the Market Place were closed during the funeral."4Confirmation of Estate.
